The set up from book 1 is totally necessary. Otherwise you wouldn't get where either character was coming from. Their history in Catch a Ghost was really, really important. It's gotta be read after book 1 IMHO. It doesn't do as well without the angst of book 1 and book 1's lack of relationship resolution made book 2 ABSOLUTELY necessary!
