Try out WLW and see if you like it. I absolutely love it for the template plugin. I have a template for everything (reviews, memes, promo posts, giveaways, spoiler code, etc.).

I'm DNFing a lot more books now than when I did when I first started blogging. I just have way too many books in my TBR pile to sit through a book I'm not enjoying.

CSS is a bitch. I took a web design class and it still gives me fits. Do you use Firefox or Chrome? Both browsers have options that allow you to look at the CSS on every page. It's VERY helpful when you're trying to target a specific area of CSS. I can't remember if it works with Blogger blogs, though. Damnit.

Never heard of Windows Live Writer-will have to look into that! I agree with all else you said. I am still on Blogger because of 1-financial reasons and 2-I am so not tech savvy! I generally write my reviews on Microsoft Word then copy/past them over. It is hard to say no to authors but I do have to on occasion--especially if I know for sure I will not like the book or genre. I do prefer paperback books! I love to cuddle up in bed to read and have yet to win a Kindle--it is extrememly uncomfortable to read it sitting at my computer (yes I do have that Kindle installed!) The hardest part is actually getting comments!!

I think being honest about what you can afford financially can really help you in the long run. Make the most of what you have now. The rest will work itself out. And, speaking from experience, there are more/different issues with being self-hosted. (And I'm self-hosted because my business is self-hosted and I can use that space.)

One of the best things I've learned? To embrace myself. The only "right" way to blog is to do it the way that works for me.
