The vampires of Asheville, North Carolina, want to establish their own clan, but since they owe loyalty to the Master Vampire of New Orleans they must work out the terms with him. To come up with an equitable solution, he sends an envoy with the best bodyguard blood money can buy: Jane Yellowrock.Reviewed By: BabsBut when a group of local campers are attacked by something fanged, Jane goes from escort to investigator. Unless she wants to face a very angry mast vampire, she will have to work overtime to find the killer. It's a good thing she's worth every penny.
In a Nutshell: Another great story in the Jane Yellowrock world. A fabulous job by the audiobook narrator as well. Fans of urban fantasy should be reading this series!
Why I Read This Book: This is a continuation of my summer glom of the Jane Yellowrock series.
The Set Up: This book takes place in Asheville rather than New Orleans. The Truebloods and Molly’s sisters are big players in this story. We find out what Evangeline was really up to in Mercy Blade (my review) when she was staying with Jane in New Orleans and what she’s been up to since she left NOLA. Two worlds kind of collide in this one. Jane is in Asheville on vamp business and then witch stuff that started in New Orleans comes to a head in Asheville.
What I Liked: After I finished the book and was thinking about what to write for my review, the song “Witchy Woman” by The Eagles popped into my head. I think it’s a perfect representation of this book for me.
I like that Jane is pretty fearless but she does let her mouth and cockiness get her in trouble. In this story, she gets herself in a real bind and the consequences extend beyond just this story.
Jane has a lot of important decision points in this book. Does she go back to New Orleans or stay in Asheville? Does she keep working for the head vamp Leo? Does she get involved with Rick again? What about Bruiser? And she also has one of Leo’s protégés, Gregoire, after her. I like that not all the questions get answered in this book. Life doesn’t get wrapped with a tidy bow, all the decisions made and made correctly, and it makes sense to me Jane’s life isn’t going to get simplified and straightforward in one book.
I was sad for Jane in the end. She made the right call in the critical moment but what price will she pay? She’s possibly losing friends and allies forever. And there was no clear answer on her love life—does she have a future with Rick? Or would she be better off with someone else?
Overall Impression: I really liked this story. Enough gets resolved I was satisfied with the end but at the same time ready to read the next story and find out what happens next. Does Jane get involved with someone? Does she go back to New Orleans? I can’t wait to read on!
Bab’s Rating:
I really like this series! I think there are one or two slower, less interesting books earlier in the series, but I've just finished #7 & I definitely think they get better as the series goes on.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Have you read book 8 yet? Broken Soul came out this month. I think it's the fastest I've finished any of the books in the series so far! Thanks for commenting :)
DeleteI'm glad you enjoyed this! I read the first book in September (on audio) and I struggled with it - but ti was so my fault. I was too distracted for the kind of serious world building and plot development that was going on! So I'm planning to continue, but to find times I can really focus.
