Jane, a shapeshifting vampire-hunter-for-hire, crosses paths with a stranger who has arrived in New Orleans, enlisted to hunt vampires who have gone insane-or so he says...Reviewed By: Babs
In a Nutshell: This is an awesome story. I’m really into the world and characters. I’ve been listening to audiobooks for most of the series and the narrator is a great performer.
Why I Read This Book: I’ve had this series on my to-read list for awhile. I just got into the series this spring right before RT14 in New Orleans. I’m also a big fan of urban fantasy.
What I Liked: I think the narrator does an incredible job with the voices. Each character is so different. And when I go back to reading the book from the audio, I hear the characters as the narrator’s voices in my head.
Before this book, there’s already quite a cast of characters with Jane’s friends the Truebloods, the vampires of New Orleans, and the New Orleans Police Department. I like that this book gives us glimpses into more of the supernatural world with additional history of the vampires and introduces new non-human players.
Just when I think Jane is going to have a happy-for-now with one of the potential love interests, things get messed up. This time it’s pretty big and I think may drive Jane in another direction. I’m conflicted about the two front runners—they’ve both done some questionable things. Who’s the better lover/partner? I don’t know yet.
The ending—wow! Definitely a cliffhanger that made me want to immediately pick up the next in the series. There’s so much left to resolve with Evangeline, Bruiser, Rick.
What I Didn’t Like: I’m actually okay with the cliffhanger ending/un-resolved issues but some may not be. But don’t fret—books 4-7 are out now and book 8 comes out October 7!
Overall Impression: I really enjoyed this story! I recommend this series for urban fantasy fans. Faith Hunter does an awesome job of making New Orleans a character in the series which is great. The narrator does an awesome job with the accents, distinguishing between the different characters. I listened in my car mostly and kept wanting to stay in the car to keep listening.
