On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she’s vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That’s why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

The right-hand man of the Nightkind King, Xavier del Torro is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can’t ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier’s world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers—both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past….

In a Nutshell: Not my favorite of the series but good enough.

The Set Up: Tess is a normal human on the run from her Djinn ex-boss. She negotiates with the powerful vampire Xavier to be one of his attendants but Xavier’s world has complications neither could expect.

Why I Read This Book: I love this series.

What I Like: Tess is a strong, competent woman and I liked seeing her navigate the vampire world that Xavier is a part of. Her interactions with his other attendants was fun to watch.

Xavier is a different hero than a lot of romances would have. He’s a former Catholic monk so he’s apt to spout Biblical scripture while wooing Tess. This was an interesting dichotomy. He’s the classic warrior-monk from old literature so he felt timeless in a way.

What I Also Like: The Elder Races world building is always awesome. For most of the books we’ve gotten the shifter part of the world but here we get the vampires and I loved that. The vampire world is one of hidden danger and political intrigue punctuated by violent fights. This was fun to read and kept my attention.

What I Didn’t Like: Tess and Xavier lacked a chemistry for me. They spent a lot of the short novel away from each other then they’d come back together for Tess’s vampire etiquette lessons. They had no real physical contact for 75% of the novel and they didn’t share much emotional intimacy either. Once they decided to have a relationship then the romance part of the book picked up for me but the book was nearly done at that point.

I also think the author was trying too hard to make Tess interesting and unique. She was constantly breaking the rules of Xavier’s house and saying things aloud she knew she shouldn’t. I think this was supposed to be charming but it felt immature to me. Sure, it was successful in making Xavier notice Tess more but it turned me off as a reader.

IMO: I had to read this as a series fan but this won’t be the book I recommend to readers interested in trying the series.

  3. I do love this series. I have this audiobook coming from the publisher. I'm hoping to get to it soon. I'm a little worried that it doesn't seem that we see many of the Wyr characters that I love.
