Captain Garret Reed of the Nighthawk guard has a deadly mission: capture a steel-jawed monster preying on women. He hates to put his partner, Perry, in jeopardy, but she’s the best bait he has. Little does he realize, he’s about to be caught in his own trap.
Perry has been half in love with Garrett for years, but this is not exactly the best time to start a relationship—especially when their investigation leads them directly into the clutches of the madman she thought she’d escaped.

In a Nutshell: This is my favorite steampunk series and this book just confirms that.
Why I Read This Book: This series is steampunk at its finest.
What I Liked: I read romance for the relationship development and that’s exactly what I got here. Perry and Garrett have been friends but this is the point when Garrett sees the change in his feelings for Perry. I love that Garrett falls so utterly for Perry and isn’t afraid to show any and everyone how he feels for Perry. The scene where Perry falls into a madman’s torture chamber illustrates this beautifully.
Perry’s secrets could easily have ruined this book for me if they’d been dragged out but the author doesn’t do that. Instead, it’s about Perry figuring out a way (and learning to accept help) to defeat her demons.
What I Also Liked: I also have a deep love for sci-fi and this series has incredible world building. This Victorian society is mixed with vampires (of a sort), werewolves, humans and mechanical creatures. It’s all so well written that my imagination is haunted by this intricate and intriguing world.
What I Didn’t Like: This isn’t the most erotic of romance series but the emotional intensity between Garrett and Perry more than makes up for it. The laughter and trust between these two is just as intimate as their sex and I loved this as a reader. I have to also mention the unique flipping of roles in one scene where Perry is the aggressor—va-va-voom!
IMO: Steampunk doesn’t get better than this book or series. New readers should start from the beginning to fully appreciate the incredible world building in this series but any romance fan would adore these characters and their relationship.

OOH! I LOVE steampunk! Sounds like a series I'd really get into. :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, absolutely you must read it!
DeleteI love, love, love this series! But for me, the IRON SEAS series by Meljean Brooks is the best steampunk romance series out there. The attention to the steampunk world building is a notch above the rest and the storytelling is phenomenal. With that said, I do adore this series and loved this book. I gave it an A+!
