Detective Douglas Brody has only ever known the life of a cop. Raised strict but fair by his police chief father, he joined the academy right out of school, climbed the ranks hard and fast, and now works homicide for the City of Charleston. The job is his entire life. For years it’s kept him happy enough to minimize the side of him that craves what he believes is wrong. An accident on the job puts him on medical leave and everything in Brody’s world changes. He has to prove himself once more to be best cop in the department, all while dealing with Zack – his persistent, sexy, and out of the closet physical therapist.
Zack is tan skin, big grins, floppy hair and tackles his job with the same full-blown enthusiasm he does everything else. When the “patient from hell” is thrown his way by another PT who can’t handle him, Zack is committed to achieving the impossible. His new patient is a head strong and hot as hell homicide detective, who oozes as much resentment as he does sex appeal. Any involvement with a patient, especially a man who is so deep in the closet he can’t see light, is something Zack swore he’d never do. But Brody slowly proves too much to resist

In a Nutshell: Excellent MM romance with wonderful relationship progression and stellar leads.
The Set Up: Brody’s entire life is being a cop so when he’s injured and needs physical therapy in order to return to work, he’s livid—and unprepared for his sexy and confident physical therapist, Zack. Zack refuses to give into his attraction for Brody when he’s a patient but when they become friends, Zack considers it. But Brody is locked in his proverbial closet and only he can decide if he’s ready to claim Zack for his own.
Why I Read this Book: Loved the synopsis and cover.
What I Liked: I adored both these characters. Brody is prickly but so lonely and this dichotomy is compelling. The author does a stellar job of showing why Brody has made the life choices he has and how he’s at a crossroads in life where he forever remains lonely as a cop or risks it all to live a meaningful life with Zack. As a reader I cared about Brody and his choices and felt such agony along with him when he pushes Zack away.
Zack too is a lovely character. Zack’s surfer attitude masks his desire for a fulfilling relationship but he’s not desperate. I held my breath when Brody pushes him away to see how Zack would react and it was a-maz-ing. I don’t want to spoil it for readers but how Zack responds is exactly how I wanted him to react and really showcases who he is as a character.
This book is a character focused story so it was imperative that I cared for both leads as I did. Zack and Brody carry this story with their personalities, their relationship tension and heartwarming resolution.
What I Also Liked: Brody has a serial killer case that he’s desperate to solve and how this progresses is great. It gives the story some plot but doesn’t overwhelm the relationship-focus between the two men. I didn’t see the serial killer conclusion until right as it was unfolding so kudos to the author for that too.
IMO: Slow Burn is well worth the money I paid and I recommend it to other MM readers.
