Once, they were Navy SEALS. Now they are the Alpha Pack: a top secret team of wolf shifters with Psy powers who take on the darkest dangers on Earth. But sometimes the greatest danger lies within their own hearts....

Healer and black wolf shifter Zander Cole has survived horrors that would have broken a weaker man. But when a battle leaves him deaf and his powers dimmed, Zan is devastated. Believing himself to be a burden to his team, he sees only one option: leave the Pack forever.

White wolf shifter Selene Westfall knows pain—she is certain her father was responsible for her mother’s death. And she lives to exact revenge. So when she is challenged by a savage black wolf, she puts up a vicious fight—only to become the black wolf’s Bondmate as a result of his bite.

Two damaged souls—one filled with hatred and one who’s lost his reason for living—are forced together as they come to terms with their unlikely, turbulent bond. A love neither expected may be all that stands between them and a killer trying desperately to keep the past dead and buried.

In a Nutshell: This is an average paranormal romance that series fans will enjoy well enough.

The Set Up: Zander is the healer of his shifter pack enforcers but his hearing was badly damaged in their last battle against evil. Zander is contemplating leaving his pack when a mysterious white wolf tries to attack the pack leader. The white wolf is Selene who is trying to exact revenge against a father she was told killer her mother. Now these two lost souls are fated mates but a sinister force is out to kill Selene and Zander can’t allow it.

Why I Read this Book: I’ve passively enjoyed this series.

What I Liked: I’m a total sucker for world building and I like it in this series. The Alpha Pack is a group of Navy SEALS who were changed into shifters and are now an elite fighting force against evil paranormal things. I love all the different men and their roles within the unit. I also like the extra people, the mysterious and powerful Fae, Blue, and the gremlin mascot along with the pack’s new allies, the vampires. I’ve always had a love of sci-fi and this series does a really good job world building.

What I Also Liked: Zander is utterly charming. He’s a soldier-protector but with an innate kindness that comes from his healing ability. He’s got softness to his character that the others didn’t have, for instance, being able to see Selene’s revenge desire and still wanting to protect Nick, the Alpha Pack leader. Zander is a tender and hot hero who is never the selfish “alpha-hole” of many romance novels. In fact, much of the novel’s tension is set around Zander’s healing ability and the injury it causes him when he helps others.

What I Didn’t Like: As much as I like Zander, the romance was just meh. The mates trope is heavily used here so the eroticism was present but the emotional connection was an afterthought. To make it worse, Zander’s injury which was a nice character nuance was fixed too quickly and didn’t allow for any relationship growth. Selene was so set on revenge that she didn’t see Zander and his tenderness until almost too late but even that emotional connection seemed more tied to them being mates than them having a true emotional intimacy.

IMO: Series fans will know what they’re getting into here, as I did, and will like the book well enough but I doubt this will hook new readers unless they like the paranormal setting more than a lackluster romance.
