Desperate to break free…

I've spent my entire life under my father’s thumb, but now I'm finally free to make my own choices. When my roommate dragged me to my first college party, I met Finn Coram and my life turned inside out. He knows how to break the rules and is everything I never knew I wanted. A Marine by day and surfer by night, he pushes me away even as our attraction brings us closer. Now I am finally free to do whatever I want. I know what I want. I choose Finn.

Trying to play by the rules...

I always follow orders. My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She's a rule I know I shouldn't break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

Why I Read this Book: The synopsis got me. Not entirely original but a trope I enjoy.

What I Liked: I really liked the premise of Out of Line. I enjoy a good forbidden love romance. Finn walks a thin line between duty and love.

The story is told in first person narration with alternating point of views. This is a favorite narration of mine because I get to know both main characters. I’m privy to their actions and their thoughts and this gives me a more complete story.

I really liked Finn and Carrie. Finn is caring, as is Carrie. Carrie gives away the designer clothes her mom sends her and helps out in a soup kitchen, all without wanting any credit for it.

There was lots of angst between Carrie and Finn but sometimes their bickering was a little too much.

What I Didn’t Like: Carrie has a feeling that there’s something off about Finn. She would say things that left me wondering why she didn’t question Finn further. It’s like she knew but choose to ignore it time and time again.

The book ends with a cliffhanger. There’s a lot hanging in the balance and it feels contrived. If I had known Out of Line ended on a cliffhanger, I probably would have waited until all of the books came out before reading. I didn’t get closure and at this point, I’m not sure I will read Out of Time, the next book in this series. I did download a sample from Out of Time, and I got part of the question answered, but then I found out from a friend that that book also ends with a cliffhanger.

Memorable Moment:

"Are you sure?"

More positive than a proton."

"Oh my God. Never say that again."

Overall Impression: Out of Line was a good read with a trope I like but the cliffhanger ending left a sour taste in my mouth.
