He scared me. He thrilled me. And after one touch, all I could think about was getting more…

Makayla never thought she’d set foot in an underground mixed-martial arts club. But if anyone needs a medic on hand, it’s these guys. Trouble is, at her first sight of the club’s owner she’s the one feeling breathless.

All sleek muscle and restrained power, the man they call Torment plays to win at any cost. Whether it’s in the ring or in the bedroom, he knows exactly when to use a soft touch and when to launch a full-on assault. He always knows just how far he can push. And he’s about to tempt Makayla in ways she never imagined…

Why I Read this Book: I had yet to read a romance novel featuring a MMA fighter so color me intrigued when I came across Against the Ropes.

What I Liked: Makayla and Torment have a playful relationship, right from the start. They’ve got this push/pull thing going on with each other. I also liked the secret side to Torment, a twist I wasn’t expecting.

The secondary characters were just as interesting as the leads. Charlie was a fun character. He was absolutely hilarious and some of the things that he said made me laugh so hard. I also like the secondary romance between Amanda and Jake and I look forward to their book.

What I Didn’t Like: There were a few things that didn’t add up. First, there’s the fact that Makayla is an “intermediate-level EMT and pre-med grad” yet she literally gets ill at the thought of violence and spilled blood. Second, for someone who knows nothing about fighting, Makayla sure knows the name of punches. And third, the credit collector was so overly exaggerated, it felt like a plot device. Debt collectors cannot harass debtors, which is what the guy did to Makayla.

Makayla puts herself in a TSTL situation and it felt like a plot device to patch things up between her and Torment.

Memorable Moment: The scene where Torment is in a meeting and she’s waiting for him. OMG! *fans self*

Overall Impression: Even with its faults, Against the Ropes was an enjoyable read that made me laugh and made me blush. I definitely plan to read In Your Corner, book two in this series.
