In a Nutshell: Enjoyable continuation of a good series. This novella could be read solo for new readers and just enjoyed for the good storytelling and simple romance.

The Set Up: Joseph is shocked when he stumbles upon the sister of his childhood best friend dying in the woods as a mountain lion. She asks Joseph to see that her two small sons are reunited with their uncle, Dominick, whom Joseph hasn’t seen since Dom abandoned him. Dominick is a US Marshal and a mountain lion shifter with no pack until he arrives at Joseph’s to care for his young nephews. Dominick and the boys need a pack while Dom tries to convince Joseph he won’t leave him ever again.

Why I Read this Book: I enjoy this series.

What I Liked: This is a simple story that has a romance but is still more plot than sex. It allows readers to get to know Dominick and Joseph and the cute but grieving little boys. I enjoyed this plot of how Dom, Joseph and the boys become a family and how the pack from the previous books in the series comes into play.

This isn’t the most erotic of romances but given that the novella is just over a hundred pages, I liked that. Too often MM romance is erotica, which is fine, but I like storytelling and that’s what I got here. Joseph and Dom knew each other as teenagers so this relationship has a reunion feel to it that worked within the plot.

What I Didn’t Like: Joseph’s friend Vicky becomes the boys’ babysitter briefly and then is never mentioned again. Likewise, Dom’s federal agent partner, Morgan, is helping Dom catch a witness who is more than he seems only to suddenly disappear as well. I liked these characters and their sudden and inexplicable disappearance was odd, especially since Morgan was sleeping in the guest room. Still, this is a little thing and not one I should dwell on.

IMO: Series readers like me will like Wild Magic. Since this novella is only loosely connected to the series, and that at novella’s conclusion, new readers will be able to enjoy this shifter romance as well.
