Gil Donigan has made a career of treating the word “love” like something from an NFL playbook. Then he meets Devon Drake, and for the first time says “I love you” and really means it. Devon immediately bolts, and that was the last thing Gil expected. But maybe he had it coming; he got as good as he’d ever given. Karma's a bitch, he thinks, but he’ll take the hit like a man. His new game plan? Shake off the heartbreak and move on, but Gil may need to rethink his recovery when Devon turns up on his doorstep with an enigmatic box, begging for a chance to explain.

I loved the premise of this short novella, with one lead confessing love and the other running from it. This is a unique romantic tension that was adroitly handled as Gil pines for Devon and Devon mysteriously returns.

My issue was this should have been a first-person narration, not third-person. Third person narration to me means I get both characters’ thoughts and opinions. But here Gil is the narrator, going backward in time to explain his previous cavalier claims at loving other men. Then Gil shares an internal monologue in his current narration of events with things like, “Gil loved him crazy mad and bad with this white-hot, insane intensity that’d be scaring the shit out of him if it wasn’t making him so fucking happy, his farts had to smell like cinnamon. He was so damned blissed out by the enormous affection swelling in a chest formerly echoing with emptiness—there had really been only one thing to do. Seeing as how he didn’t feel like farting.” This narration just left me feeling out of sorts reading it and think the first-person would have fixed my issue.
