Bloggiesta 2013: The Starting Line

Bloggiesta Starting LineBloggiesta was originally created by Maw Books
and is now hosted by It’s All About Books & There’s a Book.

This round of Bloggiesta runs from September 20th – 22nd.

Bloggiesta is a 3-day blog-a-thon where you try to complete as many things on your blog to-do list as you can. I constantly have a never-ending to-do list, so I look forward to Bloggiesta. Here is everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, on my list:

Bloggiesta Related:

  1. Check out the new mini-challenges.
  2. Check out other participants’ starting line post and cheer people on.
  3. Find new-to-me blogs.
  4. Comment.
  5. Participate in at least one Twitter chat.

Routine Blog Maintenance:

  1. Back up blogs and import to WP.
  2. Cross post my reviews to Goodreads and NetGalley.
  3. Cross post all reviews to Pinterest.
  4. Go through all Pages and update as need be.
  5. Update reading challenge page.
  6. Update Reviews by Author index.
  7. Update Reviews by Title index.
  8. Clean out sidebar.
  9. Update recent review section.
  10. Update current giveaways section.
  11. Catch up on writing my reviews.
  12. Schedule J9’s reviews.

Get Ahead:

  1. Format upcoming reviews.
  2. Format and schedule future Thursday Thirteen posts.
  3. Format month in review post for September.
  4. Format next My Bookish Wants & Gots post.
  5. Write up sign-up posts for all 2014 reading challenges I am hosting.
  6. Decide on whether or not I will do a review link up post for all 2014 reading challenges I am hosting. Might create a Facebook group for each reading challenge or just have the sign-up post.

Try Something New:

  1. Try out rotating ads.
  2. Try making a 3D book cover with GIMP.
  3. Try out a different sharing widget/code.
  4. Try out a different related posts widget/code. Dropped Link Within and decided to go with nRelate. Best decision ever!
  5. Try out a password protected page. Did it! I don’t currently have a use for this, but it’s good to know how to do it.

Miscellaneous:

  1. Check for broken links.
  2. Create new business cards.
  3. Import Goodreads to LibraryThing.
  4. Update old reviews with current format.
  5. Customize email subscription confirmation email.
  6. Update tabs on Facebook page.
  7. Update navigation drop down menu to indicate that there’s another menu to see.
  8. Apply for Twitter cards.

As you can probably tell by the crossed off items, I got a head start on tackling my list. I hope to get 95% of the items on my list completed. Yeah, I’m reaching high. But there some items that have been on past Bloggiesta to-do lists that never get touched, so I’m determined to get them done.

I’m hosting a mini-challenge on How to Use IFTTT to Automate Your Online Activities (and More!), so be sure to check it out. You can also check out my previous mini-challenges, How to Use Pocket to Save Time and Backing Up Your Blog, as well as the entire list of current and previous Bloggiesta mini-challenges.

Are you participating in this round of Bloggiesta? If so, leave a comment with a link to your starting line post and I’ll stop by.

  1. Great list, there's a lot on here that is getting my wheels turning. :) Thanks again for your IFTTT challenge!

  2. Ok, I am curious, do bloggers have an automated way to do the cross-posting between a Wordpress blog, Amazon and Goodreads? When I remember, I copy/paste the review between them all, and when I saw your IFTTT post I thought maybe that was the answer, but I don't see a way to do it there.

    1. IFTTT does not have channels for Amazon or Goodreads, so no, you wouldn't be able to automatically cross post that way. Perhaps there's a WP plugin of some sort?

    2. I googled it and came up with this WP and IFTTT tutorial.

Well, this is going to be dangerous, I can see.

  4. "Dropped Link Within and decided to go with nRelate. Best decision ever!" I am curious why you think nRelate is better? I use Link Within but if there is a better one out there I will switch!!

    1. The reason I was looking for an alternative for Link Within in the first place was because the posts the widget came up with weren't related. LOL The irony. I did a little researching on the www and the 2 most common alternatives are nRelate and Outbrain.

nRelate is customizable, way beyond Link Within. But most importantly, the posts it pulls ARE RELATED. It's free and definitely worth giving a try.

Also, I found out that Link Within redirects through its own site. I don't like this.

    1. I have a constant never-ending blog to do list but Bloggiesta gives me an excuse to focus on it for a set amount of time.

  6. Great list! I hope you get lots of things crossed off. I LOVE crossing things off of a list. Really feeds my OCD. :)

I also really like the idea of dropped Linked within. I like the look of what you've used in it's place. Sorry, already forgot the name of it. : )

    1. I love crossing stuff off the list! Best feeling ever.

I am loving nRelate! Link Within just wasn't making the cut.

  7. Your list is amazing!!!! Updating my review format is one of my tasks and it's so huge, I'm not sure if I will be able to get it done! I'm looking forward to participating in your IFTTT challenge. During the mini Bloggiesta you mentioned IFTTT during a Twitter chat and I immediately signed up. Unfortunatly I haven't been using it for nearly half of the things I can so I will be utilizing your challenge big time :) Good luck on all your goals, I hope you get a ton completed!!!

  9. Excellent list! I still have to do the IFTTT challenge today. *scribbles note* You can finish 95% no problem!

Thanks for all the help this weekend, too. You're a sweetie :)
