Thursday Thirteen: Bookish Confessions

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday Thirteen is a weekly meme with a simple theme: each Thursday you blog a list of 13 things. What kind of things? Any kind! Just come up with a list theme and run with it.

I got the idea for this week’s Thursday Thirteen from Good Books Good Wine. April is doing a 15 Day Book Blogging Challenge and it sounds like a lot of fun. Since I was late in the game, I took one of the challenges and incorporated into a list for this week’s Thursday Thirteen post.

Brianna’s List:

  1. I find myself tapping on a word in a print book and waiting for the definition to appear. This is a habit brought on by reading mostly ebooks instead of print books.
  2. I am a book hoarder. I will collect books in a series even though I haven’t read the first book.
  3. I (still) have yet to read a Stephen King novel but I’ve watched a few movies based on his novels.
  4. My TBR pile is embarrassingly huge. I have 500+ Kindle books and at least 250 print books in my possession to read.
  5. I no longer have qualms about DNFing a book. If a book is not capturing my interest for any reason, or if it’s not working for me, I drop it like it’s hot.
  6. I’m burned out on PNR. I don’t know when, or if, I’ll read the genre again. In the last 12 months, I’ve read ONE PNR book (not counting the Elemental Assassin series because that’s Urban Fantasy, and yes, it’s different).
  7. I can’t justify paying more than 99¢ for a novella (ebook) or more than $5.99 for a novel (ebook). I am most likely to buy an ebook that’s priced between 99¢ – $4.99.
  8. I cannot get myself to read a historical romance novel. I keep telling myself to try at least one book but nothing about the period interests me. I’m also afraid I’ll get lost in the dialogue.
  9. Even though I own a Kindle Touch and a Kobo Aura HD, I do most of my reading on my iPad Mini.
  10. Audio books do not work for me. I just don’t have the attention span for it; I zone out. Also because I always have to keep an ear open to listen to the kids so an audio book would never have my complete and undivided attention.
  11. As much as I love looking at color-coordinated bookshelves (and I do), I cannot organize my books that way. My OCD will not allow books in a series, or by the same author, to be separated.
  12. Unless a book starts in the middle of an action sequence, it takes me a while to get into a book.
  13. I judge books by their cover. I’m a cover whore and if the cover doesn’t grab me, I am likely to pass on the book.

J9’s List:

  1. I read over 100 pages an hour.
  2. The only romance print book I own is Meagan McKinney's Lions and Lace because it isn't yet available as an ebook.
  3. I never read with music on.
  4. My secret genres to read are women's studies and social sciences like anthropology, sociology and archeology.
  5. I only use Goodreads to track my romance reading, not my secret genres.
  6. I read 400 to 500 romance books a year and about 75 non-fiction secret genre books.
  7. I reread 4 series at least once a year: Faith, Love & Devotion by Tere Michaels, The Hathaways by Lisa Kleypas, Cut & Run by Abigail Roux, and Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward.
  8. I don't have a TBR pile and am often bookless searching for my next fix, err, I mean book.
  9. I often read books that only sorta interest me since I'm often bookless. I love the gems I sometimes find doing this.
  10. I recently listened to my first romance audio book, Men of Smithfield: Mark and Tony by LB Gregg and blushed so much at the male narrator's reading of the sex scenes.
  11. Don't think I'll be listening to any more romance audio books.
  12. I dislike two romance tropes: BDSM and May/December romances.
  13. Brianna is my bestest book buddy ever and I adore working with her on The Book Vixen.

  1. awww, these were fun!! I have to laugh about J9's audio experience. I love audiobooks because that's the only way I get any housework done, but so far, I've stuck to pretty mild stuff for audio...a lot of UF or the mild contemporary. Great lists today, girls! smiles...

    1. It's fun to see Bri's confessions; you have any you want to share, Christi? ;) Tho that audio one is a good idea. Maybe I'll try an UF.

    2. J9's audio book confession cracked me up too. I would probably giggle listening to a steamy scene.

    3. I have a TON of confessions...LOL! I actually have a contemporary romance started that I'm writing called Confessions of a Book Blogger. I need to finish it because it's a ton of fun, but every chapter starts out with a confession. I'm right up there with Brianna on my TBR list...I have over 400 books on my kindle and right at 500 in print that all need to be read. O.O I probably should stop buying books....

  2. I prefer my audiobooks to not have steamy scenes. There is something so much more embarassing to have someone read it to you than to just read it silently yourself on paper.

    2. You know it's funny, but it bothers me more when the narrator is male. I was listening to one the other day and it was fairly mild, but it was a male narrator reading the female's part during one of those scenes and I just kept picturing him trying to record it. LOL...yeah, any sex scenes in audio, I think I prefer female narrators. :o)

    3. This narrator was great in the non-erotic scenes; he brought great humor to the reading but the sex moans and sighs were just too much!LOL
