The greater the risk, the hotter the reward…Homicide cop Troy Bennett had a reputation on the Chicago PD for being fearless and in control—until the night his daredevil partner is killed during a raid. From that moment on, he swears he’ll never again be responsible for the loss of a loved one. To escape his demons, Troy transfers to the NYPD, bringing him up close and personal with Ruby Elliott, a beautiful, street-savvy pool hustler.
Reckless and stubbornly independent, Ruby embodies everything Troy’s avoiding, but when she walks into O’Hanlon’s Pub and blows his carefully laid plans to hell, Troy knows he has to have her—risks be damned. But there’s a connection between Ruby’s shadowed past and a case Troy’s working involving a notorious Brooklyn felon, throwing her safety into jeopardy. Confronted with his biggest fear, will Troy push Ruby away to keep her safe or fight to keep her in his arms where she belongs?
Why I Read this Book: I'm a sucker for 99¢ ebooks. Add in a man of the law and a pool hustler, need I say more?
What I Liked: His Risk to Take had me completely captivated from the first page all the way to the very last. I read in less than 24 hours and if I could've had my way, I would've read the book in its entirety in one sitting. This story has two very interesting characters that come together. There’s Troy, the cop who likes to dominant in the bedroom, and Ruby, the mouthy pool shark. I liked both characters right off the bat. Both have their faults and come from not so perfect pasts but they were dynamic together.
Troy and Ruby have an intense yet passionate relationship. Together they are dynamite, like a bomb waiting to go off. Troy is a durrrty boy in the bedroom. I like how the relationship was a bit of a push and pull with Troy being the dominant party. Ruby was totally on board with that so there was no awkwardness. Theirs was an intense romance with fierce passion and chemistry.
I enjoyed the thrill of not only Troy and Ruby’s intense relationship but also that of the secondary story arc revolving around the case Troy was working on. I also like how one story arc interwove with the other, which I thought made for an interesting read.
What I Didn’t Like: No complaints from me.
Memorable Moment:
“I’m going to put you on your knees, Ruby. You’re going to hate how much you love it.”
Overall Impression: His Risk to Take was a fun thrill ride with a bit of danger mixed in with a lot of romance. This book hooked me and didn’t let up. I’m definitely going to go back and read the first book in this series.
