In a Nutshell: Good addition to the series with decent romance and finally a culmination of the Dark Lord series’ plot.
The Set Up: Cassie is one of the four royal Were sisters and a prophet. Cassie has been kept captive by those wanting to use her visions, most recently the Dark Lord who desires to reign over all the realms. Caine was a cur turned pure-blood Were who rescued Cassie from the demon Dark Lord. Now they’re on the run from the Dark Lord and must work with the Vampire King and his allies to save the world from the demon Dark Lord.
Why I Read this Book: I’ve been a fan of the Guardians of Eternity series since book one. In fact, book three in the series, Darkness Everlasting, is one of my all-time favorite romances. I didn’t much care for the two books directly preceding this one but Cassie and Caine’s romance was introduced in those books so this one was on my TBR pile.
What I Liked: Finally there is some conclusion in the series’ plot arc of the demon Dark Lord! I was getting mighty tired of this villain and was pleasantly surprised that there was some resolution to that storyline, though not entirely wrapped up, of course. Plus, the charming gargoyle, Levet, steals the show here and I thought that a charming culmination to his characters and friendship with the series’ heroines.
Cassie and Caine’s romance is solid, just like the other romances in this well written series. I like that Cassie rescues Caine a few times and this strength was a nice twist in a paranormal romance.
What I Also Liked: I can’t lie, I adore that Styx, the Vampire King and hero of one of my favorite books of all times, Darkness Everlasting, is in this book. He leads the united paranormals in their war against the Dark Lord so he’s featured in this constantly. Caine and Cassie join forces with Styx and the others from this series and I love this. Anytime I can revisit couples from stories I’ve enjoyed, I’m a super happy reader and all the other couples battle here.
What I Didn’t Like: This isn’t a book that a non-series reader could just pick up. There are way too many characters and plots for a new reader to jump in here but given that I am a series reader it hit everything I wanted. This book didn’t wow me but it was a solid read.
IMO: Series fans will be like me and *have to* read this installment but new readers should go back to the beginning and catch up to this one.
J9’s Rating:
nice review J9, I still have to start reading this series. And I have the first 5 books or so on my shelves.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I think the books earlier in the series were better. Not to beat a dead horse, but DARKNESS EVERLASTING, Styx story is one of my favorite paranormal romances ever. These last 3 or 4 have been good but not stellar like the earlier ones, IMO, and they've contained a lot of series story arc plot that new readers would be lost in.
