Monday Bites: Twilight Re-Read Along Chapters 1-5

MondaysBite

When I saw that a group of bloggers (GReads, Lisa the Nerd, The Secret Life of an Avid Reader & The Reading Housewives) were hosting a re-read along for Twilight, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to re-read the book. If you’d like to re-read along too, you can get more details and sign up here. I’m hoping these bloggers will host a re-read along for the rest of the series as well (hint, hint Winking smile).

I’ve only read the Twilight Saga once and that was back in early 2009, so it’s been a while for me. After finishing the last book in the series, I was in the biggest funk. I couldn’t imagine life without Bella and Edward. (I’m a cheeseball, I know.) Last time I was in a funk like this was right after watching The Notebook. (And that’s a whole ‘nother story for another time.) Reading the Twilight series not only got me back into reading but it opened up my reading world to Paranormal Romance and YA fiction.

This week’s questions – Chapters 1-5:

1. Have you ever had to start over in a new place, like Bella did in Forks? This new place could be a school, job, or town... just something with a new setting. How easy or difficult was this for you?

I’ve never had to start over in a new state but I did have to start over in a new city right at the end of my 8th grade year. It was weird and lonely at first but nothing too difficult. I missed my old friends but made new ones along the way.

2. Do you picture the actors from the movie as the characters in the book while you are reading?

Now I do, yes. It’s hard not to. The actors have branded these characters. But I think KStew brought too much angst to Bella’s character onscreen.

3. What are your first thoughts on meeting Edward in Bella’s Biology class? At first he was annoyed by her presence, but then after a week away he returns & finds him self very interested in her. Do you think this helped or hindered the storyline?

He was definitely sending her mixed signals. It would have frustrated the heck out of me too. I think it helps the storyline by peaking the reader’s curiosity. Edward’s very mysterious; I wanted to know why he was so turned off by Bella at first.

4. Out of the secondary characters Bella meets at school, who is your favorite and why? (I am referring to the humans, not the vampires in this question.)

None of them really.

5. There is a lot of dialogue between Edward and Bella in these first few chapters that I feel played a major role in developing their relationship. What are some of your favorite quotes? or moments?

I like the part where Edward saves Bella from being squashed by Tyler’s van. I also like the part where Edward invites Bella to sit with him at lunch:

“I think your friends are angry with me for stealing you.”

“They’ll survive.”

“I may not give you back, though,” he said with a wicked glint in his eyes.

  3. What a terrific idea! I should try to squeeze that in too! Currently I am taking part in a Harry Potter marathon, one book a month, which started last month.

Have you read Stephanie Meyer's The Host yet? It's another good one!

  4. That is one of my favorite quotes!! And yeah it is hard not to picture them, but I feel like I am really good about separating the movie from the book and can go back to how I originally saw them in my mind.

Also, I was in a huge funk after finishing the series, re-reading has been soooooo much fun!

  5. I was in a huge funk too. It took being introduced to City of Bones to get out of it. Amy @ www.bookgoonie.com

  6. I feel that Bella was portrayed badly as well. She was missing alot of her personality and fire she shows in the books. Also Edward was a little to stiff of a character. In the book at times he is giggling and making jokes. I do like the movie but now that I have re-read the book I think they missed big time.
    Love your blog.

  7. We've already discussed possibly re-reading the entire series. I guess we just want to see if a Twilight re-read along was a success first. :)

At least you didn't have to move in the middle of high school! But still, jumping from junior high to high school AND at a new school has to be tough!

It IS hard not to picture the characters!

You don't like any of the humans!? haha. It is a vamp book so technically you don't have to!

    Love that quote too!

  8. I love the "I might not give you back line"too...
and i totally agree with the movie Bella-playing her much differently than the book describes...

  9. the mixed signals would probably end any attempts on my end to flirt - but i'm glad they didn't with Bella!

  10. Jill - Yay on signing up! It's still early on in the re-read along; you'll definitely be able to catch up :)

Shirley - I've been wanting to re-read the HP series but I'm just not in the mood to do so yet. I love finding re-read alongs. I don't re-read much so when I find one for a book I loved, I'm in!

I haven't read The Host. I'm not a fan of sci-fi so I'm a bit hesitant to read it.

Yani - This series has that effect on reader (putting people in a funk afterwards).

bookgoonie - It took Sookie Stackhouse and the BDB series to get me out of my funk :)

mrs_laura_koehler - I think the movie missed the 'softer' side of Edward too. Thanks for stopping by! Glad you like the blog :)

Jacinda - Well if you ladies do decide to do a re-read along for the rest of the series, I'm in!

Yeah, moving in the middle of high school would have been harder.

Na, the humans bore me. It's all about Bella, Edward and Jacob for me ;)

lisa - you know, if I were in Bella shoes, I probably wouldn't have given up either. It's all about the chase. And Edward's too interesting and mysterious to let go :)

  11. *cries* I wish I had the time to re-read the Twilight series!!! I loved this series SO VERY MUCH! And it got me (and so many others!) back into reading. I think when I get back from Italy I'll have to pick the books back up just for fun. :)

  13. Oh yes...were on the same page as Kstew playing Bella. I like her as an actress in more gritty roles. This may sound mean but Bella is too girly for her to play.

  16. Mama Kitty - I know what you mean! I've been wanting to re-read this series for a while now. This seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to do so. I hope you get a chance soon, after your trip :)

Tina - I agree; KStew's a little 'rough around the edges' to be playing Bella's character. LOL

  17. I also really like Edward's "I may not give you back" :) I agree, Edward saving Bella is a turning point for them.

I hope they continue a re-read with the rest of the books as well, it will get us all ready for Breaking Dawn part 1 in NOV. :)
