I want to pick your brains to see how y’all decide which books you decide to read from your TBR pile first. I’m not talking about review requests. We each have our own rhyme and reason in which dictates our reading order for review requests. I’m referring to that massive pile of books that you’ve accumulated over the months (or years). How to you decide which to read first, then next and so on?
There are so many books that I want to get to right now but unfortunately I can only read one book at a time. My TBR pile is over 200 books deep and that’s not even including the books that I have on my TBR list that I plan to get from my local library (that list currently stands at almost another 200). Seeing how I can probably read about 100 books next year, you can surely see my dilemma. So many books, so little time and all that.
If you really want to help a Vixen out, please feel free to check out what books are in my TBR pile and let me know which book(s) should be at the top of my 2011 reading list. If you’re really brave, you can check out the books that are on my TBR list, which I plan on getting from my local libraries (Library One is closest to my home, Library Two is just the next town over).
I’m in need of all the help I can get O.O
I'm a mood reader. I go browsing my TBR shelves like I would browse a good bookstore (after all, I wouldn't have bought them in the first place if they didn't interest me) and choose the book that looks like it will hit whatever spot needs hitting. That is how I picked The Secret History of the Pink Carnation which is my current read and I am loving it.
ReplyDeleteI decide what to read based on the mood I'm in. Then, I just kinda grab at what I have on my nightstand, or dresser, or whatever stack happens to be close! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm also a mood reader too. I also like to mix it up with adult books vs. young adult books, so I can a have a variety to choose.
ReplyDeleteI use the monthly reading challenges on GR to help me decide what to read. I do mainly two challenges (but I've signed up for 3 this month) a month. I usually sign up for the Monthly Paranormal Group Reading challenge and the M/M Monthly Challenge. They give you 10 topics/challenges, one for each book and you pick a book from your TBR pile that matches. I end up with a list of about 20 books to read for the month from my TBR piles. I don't get through them all though and that's ok with me. I can usually get at least 12-15 books read each month from my selections read. :)
ReplyDeleteUnless there is one that needs read by a certain date..for a review or something...I read whatever Im feeling that day. No order. Just whatever sounds good at the time :)
ReplyDeleteI tend to gravitate to the newer books in my pile vs. the older ones that have been sitting there awhile. The only thing that usually disciplines me to read the older books are purposely finding reading challenges that would make me read the older books!
ReplyDeleteAnd you should definitely read Glass Houses by Rachel Caine first. I love that series, I'm in the middle of the series, and my library is taking FOREVER to get it in!
I use to have a nice system. Every month I would pick out what I was gonna read and then go from there.
ReplyDeleteThat went out the window very fast. Now it depends on what books need to get reviewed, the omg I gotta read that and really my mood.
I use an odd way. I discovered after a couple of times of staring at my bookshelf (or the library's) and not being able to firmly decide on anything that I needed something to decide for me. I started using random.org. Since I use goodreads and everthing is sorted as to whether I own it or the library has it and then each of those lists is numbered, it seemed perfect. It's been working really well. I don't always go with the first one that's picked because of my mood, but's I won't allow myself to get the generate button more than 3 times. It also helps when I go to the library because I know exactly what I'm looking for and if it's checked out or not.
ReplyDeleteEek! I know what you mean. My TBR pile is just as bad as yours is, and it's only getting worse! Like some people already mentioned...mood definitely helps. Also, as far as my review request books go, I try to start with the one that's been on the pile the longest, if I can, though that doesn't always work!
ReplyDeleteAs far as what you should start with in 2011...I would definitely put Clockwork Angel and the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead at the top of the list!
I recommend the Patricia Briggs, Mercedes Thompson and Alpha and Omega series'. They're are some of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteWHOA! Those are some HUGE TBR piles. :) Mine are big, but not that big. LOL
ReplyDeleteI pretty much browse my shelf to see what I am in the mood for. Sometimes I pick the first of a series and then try and read the series back to back... sometimes it's more fun to be able to keep reading through at one time.
Sometimes it depends on my mood. I also have challenges I am working on so I will rotate between books to be reviewed, challenges and then just because I feel like it books.
I wish there were more hours in the day for reading. I plan to read 111 books in 2011 because I joined a challenge to do that.... wish me luck. LOL
So many different replies. I read review books first. After that it just depends on my mood.
ReplyDeleteAs dorky as it is, I have all of my books in a word document and they're all numbered. So, when I go to pick my next book, I simply go to random.org and pick a random number! It's worked pretty well for me so far, I must say.
ReplyDeleteDepends on mood. I like to to mix adult & YA too. Also if the plot is something I'm dying to read then I'll put that book first.
ReplyDeleteI go where my mood takes me. It's a very flighty way to read, but I find I enjoy the books more that way than if I try to micromanage and schedule my reading too much.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go browse through your TBR now :)
Im all about the mood too! I can want to read a book for the longest time, but if Im not in that genre's mood, it will NOT happen!
ReplyDeleteFrom ur TBR I recommend:
Iron Kiss by Patricia Briggs
Red Rock Pass series by Moira rogers
Heart of the Wolf series by Terry Spear {it gets better with each book}
MIdnight Breed series by Lara Adrian
Southern Arcana series by Moira rogers
Shifters series by Rachel Vincent
Vampire academy series by Richelle mead
Hunger Games trilogy
Black Dagger Brotherhood series!!!
Lords of the underworld series
sookie stackhouse series
Morganville vampires series
=))))
pshh...200?? Try over 1000 and counting!!!
ReplyDeleteAfter the review books are completed for the week, I read from my TBR pile on the weekend. I use to have s system, but it failed as my collection grew. Now I force myself just to grab a book by closing my eyes and doing the eeny-miney-moe method! LOL
OMG though! You HAVE to read Backstage Pass next!! HOT!HOT!HOT!!!
Awesome book! I made sure I was number one on PBS for the next one in the series!! I stalked that series for the wait list!
I totally feel your pain! My TBR pile is big and I rarely get a chance to make a serious dent in it. I think you should just close your eyes and pull one of the shelves! How I do it is, I have all my books cataloged in the book swapping site, paperbackswap.com and then i look to see which ones are being 'wished for' and I choose from there based on my moods :) So some narrowing down and some choice.
ReplyDeleteFrom your list
ReplyDeleteBlack Dagger Brotherhood series
Lords of the Underworld series
They are at the top of my all time fave list.
As for deciding what to read now, I didn't have a system, just picked and chose but then I joined GR and thought okay maybe I might get a system going with doing challenges especially trying to branch out of my comfort zone um no that didn't work either.
Now I'm just trying to catch up on my fave author's newest releases before I tackle anymore.
I like the random org idea I think I might try that myself.
I made a list ;)

Some I have read, some I have not, but are dying to.
I choose books from what I want right now, one day I want one genre, another day another genre
It's all about my mood. I alternate between adult and YA. As far as your TBR, VA first!!!
ReplyDeleteA lot of mood readers. I do that sometimes. I like Julie, where I also alternate between YA and 'adult' fiction.
ReplyDeleteFerishia - I think I'm going to follow your lead and make sure that I pick a few books a month that will satisfy the reading challenges I'm participating in.
Rachel - I will be sure to put Glass Houses on the upper part of my list.
Anna - I was wondering if people did that - select books to read for the month. I was thinking about doing that but I don't know if I would stick to it.
Page - I like that idea! Using random.org to help select your next read. I'm going to try that!
Natalie @ MM - Vampire Academy is definitely at the top part of the list. I've been wanting to read this series forever!
Chrystal - I like to read books in a series back to back as well. I think that's going to influence my reading "schedule", depending on which books I can get. Good luck with your reading challenge!
Melina - Yeah, review books come first for me too. Now I'm starting to work on books from my TBR pile. It's getting out of control! LOL
JessiKay89 - Another random.org user! I am definitely going to try this!
Larissa - I'm going thru your recommendations. Thank you!
Amy J - 1000?!!! Oh my. I've been trying to figure out how to balance review requests and my TBR pile. I thought about doing ever other. Right now I'm trying to get through all my review requests to start off with a clean slate. Backstage Pass is on the top part of my list :)
Blodeuedd - I'll be going thru your list. Thank you!!!
Kelli - Yeah, I need a good mix of YA and adult reads. Too many YA books back to back and I go crazy. And yes, VA is at the top of my list. I feel like I'm really missing out on something BIG.
Another thing I might try is putting up a poll and have you guys decide what I read next. I've done it once or twice in the past and thought it was fun.
I try to read ARCs by their pub date but this doesn't always happen. But I always read what I've been dying to read first. :) Happy Reading.
ReplyDeleteUsually, I'll grab the book that's on top ... which isn't a good method, since that's usually the latest one in. This upcoming year, I'm participating in some challenges to help me get through my personal TBR pile - I hope that helps me out a bit.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I read just because I'm in the mood for that type of book (maybe I'm coming off of a heavy, intellectual book and need a light read or maybe I've come off of a few bleh! books in a row and need to grab something that will remind me why I like to read :))
