Will Bloglines Survive?

Back in September of this year, I had learned that Bloglines was going bye-bye. I was sad and I didn’t know what I was going to do with all my blog subscriptions. So I put up a post asking for suggestions. And what do you know - that post is the 3rd most frequently visited and searched for page on my blog. On a book blog. Who knew? Seems like a lot of people were/are looking for a Bloglines replacement.

Then Knitz with Catz brings to my attention that Bloglines is no longer pulling the plug. Not yet anyways. Here’s the message from their website:

We’re happy to announce that Ask.com has entered into an agreement with MerchantCircle to keep Bloglines up and running! That means your news feeds will remain available (with your same password) indefinitely. Ask.com will maintain the current Bloglines service as-is until at least December 1, 2010 after which the service will transition wholly to MerchantCircle.

You can read more detail about MerchantCircle and its plans for the service at the MerchantCircle blog and the Ask.com blog.

Stay tuned for an email coming soon that will provide more information. In the meantime, please continue to check back here for updates, or send an email to bloglines@merchantcircle.com.

Now what does this mean to me? Not a damn thing really. Sorry Bloglines, but you’re a day late and a dollar short. I have already acclimated myself with Google Reader. I know they’re not going anywhere anytime soon and neither am I. My opinion is that Bloglines probably scared a lot of their subscribers away, forcing them to find new RSS feed aggregators. And maybe some have found one better than Bloglines, like I did.

Do you use a RSS feed aggregator? If so, which one do you use? Do you or have you ever used Bloglines?

  1. I'm one of the people who switched everything over to Google Reader. I had been using both since some feeds didn't seem to work with Bloglines. I don't like Google Reader quite as well but I'm getting used to it.

  2. Kathy - I didn't like Google Reader as much as Bloglines at first either. But now that I've been using GReader for 2 solid months now, I love it!

  3. I have a lot of email subscriptions so do not have to visit my reader much anymore but my feeds go to Net News Wire and like it much more than Google Reader as I tried it and did not ever use it much.. NNW lets me put an Icon on my desktop to open it with so that helps remind me the reader is there....
I have never even heard of Bloglines until today, started out right away a year ago with Google Reader then 5 months ago opened up the NNW reader to use instead...

  4. jackie b - I have well over 100 RSS feeds that I follow so email subscriptions would be out of the question for me. That would just wreck havoc on my inbox! LOL
