KINDLE NEWS: New Features Coming Soon

This announcement came off the Kindle Discussion Board on Amazon. If you’re a Kindle owner, I highly recommend you check out these boards to stay up to date on all things Kindle.

We wanted to let you know about two new features coming soon.

First, we are making Kindle newspapers and magazines readable on our free Kindle apps, so you can always read Kindle periodicals even if you don't have your Kindle with you or don't yet own a Kindle. In the coming weeks, many newspapers and magazines will be available on our Kindle apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and then we'll be adding this functionality to Kindle for Android and our other apps down the road. Our vision is Buy Once, Read Everywhere, and we're excited to make this possible for Kindle periodicals in the same way that it works now for Kindle books. More details when we launch this in the coming weeks.

Second, later this year, we will be introducing lending for Kindle, a new feature that lets you loan your Kindle books to other Kindle device or Kindle app users. Each book can be lent once for a loan period of 14-days and the lender cannot read the book during the loan period. Additionally, not all e-books will be lendable - this is solely up to the publisher or rights holder, who determines which titles are enabled for lending.

We will post to the forum later this year when these features are available.

I can’t wait for the lending feature! This is the best thing to come to the Kindle since Collections! I’m glad to see that Amazon is finally adding this. The Nook has had this advantage over the Kindle for over a year now.  I wonder if publishers will be generous with this feature on their books…?

Question for all you Nook owners – what percentage of the books you purchase would you say have the Lend Me feature? Is the feature available on popular titles?

Question for prospective eReader buyers – Now that Amazon has announced that they’ll be adding a lending feature, will you be more likely to buy a Kindle over a Nook?

That's interesting... but I don't think the lending feature would really sway me. After all, you can only lend the book once.

I decided against the Kindle because not all the books were available here in Canada. I wonder if the lending will be international... or if it'll be under the same rules as the e-book sales.

Thanks for posting that information! I had no idea.. and as a kindle owner, I'm psyched that I will finally be able to lend my books to friends. That has been my one issue with the kindle. (That and the fact that some ebooks are the same price as their paperback versions.. grrr.)

La Coccinelle - Yeah, you can only lend the book once and only for 14 days. And when you've lent a book out, you yourself cannot read the book. I did not know that not all eBooks are available in Canada. I wonder why the geographical restriction?

Tara - I am so excited by this news! This was one of the features that had me leaning towards the Nook but I ended up going with the Kindle anyways. The pricing for some eBooks is crazy. Who would pay more for an eBook than for a bound copy? I wouldn't.

The lending feature really won't play into which eReader I decide to buy. It will come down to price and ease of operating the devise.

Lending on Kindle.... Squee!! I look forward to that. It didn't play a role in my decision making, but I have a BFF book bud that also has a Kindle and maybe we will be able to share! I wonder if the book can be lent once per person or just once ever. That seems like a silly restriction. Thanks!!

Twimom227 - Just once ever. And only for 14 days. And when you've "lent" out a book, you cannot read it.
