BOOK NEWS: Ann Aguirre

Ann Aguirre announced on her blog today that her YA novel got a complete make-over. And by complete make-over we’re talking new cover and new title.

Here’s the book blurb:

In Deuce’s world, individuals become adults—and earn the right to a name—only if they survive their first fifteen years. By this point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups: breeders, builders, or hunters. As the names imply, each group has definite roles to play for the survival of the group.

As a Huntress, Deuce’s purpose is clear—to roam the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading the ferocious humanoids known as Freaks. This has been the status quo for as far back as anyone can remember; this is, the elders tell everyone, the way it has to be. With the introduction of Fade, a male hunter a couple of years older than Deuce, who had been adopted into her enclave a few years earlier, she becomes aware of the hidden realities of the Orwellian society in which she was born. Deviation from the norm is punished quickly and harshly.

As Deuce’s perception of her world shifts, guided by her complex partnership with Fade, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival in the tunnels. The Freaks, considered dangerous only due to their sheer numbers and ferocious appetite, have long been held as incapable of any level of thought. And yet, as Fade and Deuce encounter them in the tunnels while in a reconnaissance mission to the nearest enclave, the creatures’ behavior is evidently cunning, and therefore more dangerous. It is evident that the danger is imminent, and yet Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.

Here are the titles & covers:

Razorland vs. Enclave

razorland    enclave

(Click on covers for bigger view. Do it. Trust me. I completely missed something in the cover for Enclave the first time around.)

Razorland was the original title/cover.

Enclave is new title/cover.

Ann Aguirre wants to know what you think about the new cover and title so go over to Ann Aguirre’s blog and leave her a comment.

I want to know what you think about books getting a complete make-over like this? I personally think it could be a bit confusing for readers, especially with a new title. We see new covers all the time but change the cover and the title and that’s throwing readers a curve ball. I haven’t read the book yet so I can’t tell you which title is more suitable. I like both covers but I already grew fond of the original cover. If I were to see both of these books side by side at the book store, I’d pick up Razorland.

  1. I understand why books get new covers and even a new title. However, if I've bought the first version and they change both cover and title, I feel like they're trying to dupe me.

That said, if I saw these side by side, I'd be more likely to pick up/purchase Enclave.

  2. For some reason, I thought Razorland had been released already. But according to Goodreads, the release date is in April of 2011. I'm not sure if this is the release date for the *new* version of the book or if it was the planned release date all along. Can someone confirm this?

If that's the case, that the cover and title were changed before the book was released, then it may not be that confusing after all. But if there was a cover and title change after the book is released then that can cause quite a confusion.

  3. I'm pretty sure this hasn't been released yet. I'm looking forward to reading it as it's dystopian. I liked the old cover though the new one is somewhat brighter. I would actually pick up both these books based on cover.

  4. Kulsuma - The original cover gives me the impression that it is dystopian but I wasn't completely sure. I'm on the fence about whether or not I'm going to read this book; at the moment I'm leaning towards reading it.

  5. The book hasn't been released yet. They decided to reposition it for a broader market. The repackaging caused a pushback in release date. It was originally scheduled for January, but it's April now, which is actually a better time of year for this sort of thing. It's all very exciting.

Keep an eye on the internetz in the next couple of weeks for the live-action trailer. It's amazing.

  6. Thanks for the information Ann! I'm glad they decided to change the cover and title before the book was released. Hopefully that will avoid any confusion. I agree about April being a better time of year for a book release over January because I don't have much room in my budget for books right after the holidays. I also agree that the new cover will target a broader audience because it's more gender-neutral. I still like the original cover but I'm sure the new cover will grow on me :)

  7. Thanks for posting this! I actually noticed Enclave the other day, probably on Goodreads, but for some reason didn't process that it was the same book. I already fell in love with the description, so I'll read it either way, but I was partial to the original cover. The blood drop on the new cover is a nice touch, though.

  8. Wow I didn't know they were changing the cover and the title. I'm really looking forward to reading this and it's already on my wishlist. I like the original better because I'm already fond of it too. But I'm getting this book no matter the changes because it sounds awesome! Oh and thanks for the heads up I would have been totally confused.

  9. Glad you told us...I have been seeing Razorland around and it's good to know that it will now be Enclave. What did you miss in Razorland's cover? I looked at the bigger picture but I missed it.
