The Book Vixen: WANTED: Replacement Feed Aggregator [UPDATED]
!!! HIATUS STATUS UPDATE !!!

As you may have already known (or figured out) I've been on a brief hiatus while going through a pretty huge (but good) transition in my personal life. Things are finally settling down and I should be back in action - full force - by the last week of September. Thank you to my fellow bloggers who have graciously stopped by with guest posts during my hiatus. And thank you to all my readers who have stuck with me through this time. I've been catching up on my reading and I have some reviews on some awesome books coming soon!

WANTED: Replacement Feed Aggregator [UPDATED]

bloglines

I found out today that my beloved Bloglines will officially shut down on October 1, 2010. This saddens me. I’ve been using Bloglines for at least 5 years now, if not longer. I’ve tried using Google Reader but I don’t like how it forces you to add every blog you follow into your reader. I tried creating folders and I just can’t get it to work. With Bloglines, I had a folder for Authors, Barnes & Noble updates, Bookworms (aka book bloggers), Kindle, and a Miscellaneous folder for everything else. What am I going to do now? I’m on the hunt for a replacement web-based feed aggregator and would like to get some suggestions.

RIP

How do you stay up to date with the blogs you like to read? Do you use a web-based feed aggregator (i.e. Bloglines (R.I.P.) or Google Reader)? If so, which one do you use? What do you like about the one you use?

UPDATED 9/10/2010 5:16 pm

I gave Feed Demon a try and to be honest, I didn’t like it. It’s a download that’s constantly running in the background with messages popping up in my lower right hand screen alerting me to new posts. I’m sure there’s a way to disable the pop ups but I’m looking for a web-based feed aggregator. I like to be able to go to the feed aggregator when I’m good and ready, not have it come get me.

So, I caved and decided to give Google Reader a second chance. Carrie from Carrie Actually was kind enough to let me know what I needed to do to not have the blogs I follow show up in my subscriptions. I followed her instructions and it worked. The next thing I did was clear out all the old subscriptions I had in Google Reader – there were 664 of them. Once I had a clean slate, I imported my feeds from Bloglines. Now I have the pleasure (NOT!) of going through 1000+ feeds to weed out the old posts from the new. Not fun.

Now that I’m going through my feeds and getting familiar with Google Reader , I’ve come across a few questions that I’m hoping someone can help me out with:

  • Once I’ve added a “star” to a post, how do I look at it again? Where do all my starred posts go? I thought there was a “star” folder somewhere but I don’t see it..?
  • If you personally use Google Reader, do you sort by newest or by oldest? Or are you special and sort by “magic”? (Someone, please explain that to me.) I have it sorting by newest for now but would like to change it sort by oldest once I go through all my feeds. I like being able to read my feeds in the order that they were posted. But I’m worried that if I do sort by oldest first, that Google Reader will go back farther than I really need to go…am I correct?
  • I don’t understand the whole “followers” thing. In the left column, there’s a message telling me that I have “16 new followers”. What is that? Why do these people want to follow me on Google Reader? How did they find me?

Do you know of any Google Reader tips/tricks/hacks that you would like to share?

I use FeedDemon and I really like it. I'm not sure if it'll do everything you want, but you can check it out:

google reader can still work for you. when you're in google reader click on the settings link the upper right hand corner and then the second setting from the bottom on the first page you can uncheck to not show all those blogs you follow

carrieactually.com - I think I'm going to bite my lip and try that.

Your starred items are over on the left in the menu where it says "starred items".

I keep mine set to new items and either mark as "keep unread" if it's something I need to deal with more immediately or "star" it if I want to save something to refer back to later. I only wish the "keep unread" posts could be filtered into a separate folder. They probably can, but I haven't found out how yet.

The followers on Google reader are usually people who follow via Google Buzz, but I'm not 100% sure so don't quote me on it!

If you find out from anyone how to create a separate folder for the "keep unread" posts, let me know. Thanks!

Hope I was of some help. =O)

I use Google Reader and have folders. One for authors, one for friend's blogs (aka non-book sites) and then one for my favorite book blogs. Then I collapse the "blogs I'm following" section so I can't see it. I like having it there b/c sometime I like to check in on the blogs I follow, but because it's collapsed, I don't have to look at it. Good Luck!

I've only ever used Google Reader, and while there are some things I don't love about it, I have gotten it to work for me pretty well.

Looks like you found the 'star' items!

Now, for your sorting. I have blogs grouped into (probably too many) folders. For each folder, you can decide how you want it to sort. I only have unread items show up so if I sort by 'oldest' the first post I see will be the oldest, unread ones. It's usually only a couple of days old since I check in on blogs just about everyday.

I just changed my settings to check for you AND if you do view 'all items' (not just 'new items') and you set your sort to 'sort by oldest' you will see 30 days worth of posts -- at the top of my feeds it says "Sort by oldest only shows items from the last 30 days"

Also - there is a setting on the upper right hand side of the feed window that I often use. It's the "Show: Expanded - List". Expanded view will show you the entire post right off the bat - List will only show the Title and a first sentence or so. Clicking on the title will then expand the view to the entire post. (or not, if the specific blogger as their settings set to only show truncated views in their feed).

Ok - I'm babbling now :) Let me know if you want some screen shots or have any other questions I (might?) be able to help you with!

If you're having trouble getting into Google Reader, give Activorous (http://activoro.us) a try; it uses a totally re-imagined interface for RSS reading, and has full item tagging support, flexible feed filtering, better mobile support, and many other features missing in Google Reader.
