Synopsis for Halfway to the Grave:
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership. In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side... and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.
My Thoughts:
Thanks to Fiction Vixen, Smokin Hot Books and Smexy Books for getting me to read this series. If it wasn't for their chit-chat about Cat and Bones on Twitter (specifically an infamous chapter 32 in the 2nd book of the series), I think I would have read this series later rather than sooner. Fiction Vixen has great recommendations so I knew I was going to enjoy this series when I heard her raving about it.
This series is about Cat and Bones' story, told from Cat's point of view. Cat is a sexy, tough, strong woman and can more than handle her own. I love Cat for her perseverance and determination, even though she can be a bit stubborn at times. I have to admit, I have a girl-crush on Cat. Cat is an unique creature; her human mother was date-raped by a freshly turned vampire, resulting in Cat's half-human/half-vampire nature. Cat learns of her ancestry from her mother when she's sixteen. Her mother hates vampires with a passion and sees to it that Cat feels the same way. Cat thus hunts and kills vampires to appease and avenge her mother, hoping to find and kill her father. On the exterior Cat is human; she's breathes and has a heartbeat that vampires can detect. Talk about being the perfect Trojan horse! Her eyes, however, give her vampire side away, turning emerald green when she gets mad or excited and this confuses the heck out of vampires because they've never seen anything like her before.
Bones is a master vampire and vampire bounty hunter. He's sexy as hell, rugged, tough and who doesn't love a guy with an accent (every time he said "Hallo, Kitten." it made me purrrrr)! Cat spots Bones and picks him as her next target but he brushes her off. She tries again the next night except he turns the tables and captures her. He takes her back to his cave where he beats her almost to death. He finds her heritage interesting (and helpful) and makes her an offer she can't refuse: train with him and work with him in alliance or die. She chooses the former.
I love Cat and Bones' story. Their relationship is not perfect (if it was it would be boring) and many obstacles stand in their way. Their relationship gets tested time and time again.
The first book ends with a cliffhanger so have book #2 ready! I was in a book emergency and it took 3 bookstores before I found the 2nd book (I bought book 2, 3 and 4 that instant). Don't say I didn't worn you. This series is so addicting, I gobbled up the 4th book within 24 hours. If given the chance, I would have gobble up the first 3 in one sitting each but what can I say, life gets in the way sometimes.
If you enjoy paranormal romance then this series is a must read. Jeaniene Frost made me laugh, she made me cry. She even made my heart skip a few beats every now and then. There was never a dull moment; Frost knows how to keep a reader on their toes with twists and turns. She takes you on a thrill ride full of action, suspense, tension, passion, romance and intensity. Frost has an amazing talent; each book is better than its predecessor. I can't wait to see what she what she has in store for Cat and Bones.

The sad thing is, I have owned these books and had them in my TBR pile for probably close to half a year, and other books always seem to take reading priority over them.

I can't wait for the next book to come out!
ReplyDeleteYou are right that each book gets better and better. I have read the first three and am saving book four for emergency use only! I love Bones, but the other guys in the series---Spade, Tate, even Juan, are great too! I'm excited about reading her other Night Huntress world books too, even though I hear those are not quite as good.
