Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate

Title: Fallen
Author: Lauren Kate
Format: ARC, 1st book in a 4-book series

Synopsis from Goodreads:
There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret...even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

My Thoughts:
There have been mixed reviews on this one but I had to see, and read it, for myself. And I'm glad I did. Fallen is dark, edgy, mysterious and exciting. I found myself turning page after page in wonder. After reading the story, I went back and re-read the prologue, then read the epilogue. In doing so, I found I gained a better sense of the story and its history. The prologue ties the history with the story very well.

It takes a while before the story starts to come together but it's worth the wait. Try to be patient and enjoy the story-building. The characters, both the protagonists and thw secondary characters, are well developed as result of this. Readers will be rewarded with a fast-paced, action packed ending.

This story focuses on three main elements, which I enjoy and think make for a good read: A forbidden love, a love triangle and sexual frustration. I'm going to leave it at that (no spoilery here).

The cover is dark and beautiful. It's eye-catching and compliments the mood and tone of the story.

The reader is left with quite a cliffhanger. There are some loose ends that I hope come together in the next installment, Torment, which is set to be released in September 2010. Fallen left me hungry and craving for more of Luce's story. I cannot wait for Torment!

Move over vampires; Fallen angels are coming into town!

Great review. It is kind of slow I agree, but it is building up...

  3. Loved reading your thoughts on this. I just love this book. For me, I was hooked by the mysterious prologue and I usually hate prologues.

  4. I've wanted to read this one, but I haven't had any luck with fallen angel stories (not sure why). This one does sound good though.

  7. I love all three of those elements. I like when authors make me wait for it...the love, I mean---not the story! I agree that this one did a lot of story building. I got pretty tired of those blasted shadows...until I learned what they were really about!
